My dear friends,
This blog dedicated to all Kaavadi's offered to Lord Muruga...mainly on festive days like Panguni Uttiram, Thai Poosam, Adi Amavasya, Vykashi Visaka, Kandar Shasti puja times.
This is in continuations to my earlier blogs:
Palani, the sacred temple of Lord Muruga
Palani, The Sacred Temple of Lord Murugan - Part 2
When ever one think of Lord Karthik ( Murugan) all our memories filled with those scenes of Kaavadi, Velpuja, Alagu enthal, Thirtha kaavadi, Pushpa Kaavadi, Panneer Kaavadi, Paal Kaavadi, Jaggery kaavadi, and Annadhan..
Followed by Golden chariot, Silver Chariot processions...
Important events at Panguni Uttiram:
These Kaavadi's are made of poles from fine Teak wood or Purasai wood in the middle connected by wooden planks carved with Lord Ganesha in one side & Lord Arumuga with Valli & Deivayanai on the other side, closely fitted with bamboo sticks plyed in Half moon shape, duly decorated with fine woollen or satin safron cloth ( Red,Green, Yellow, Pink, Orange or White coloured ) embroided with artistic letters of Ohm, laced with giggles of yarn filled zari on its sides hanging & dancing according to winds directions, Peacock feathers being tied on all the four sides of kaavadi.
These kaavadis are being filled with holy water from Kodumudi near dharapuram and called as Thirtha kaavadi.
Some devotees carry flower filled Kaavadi, Some carry Jaggery filled on one side and rice filled on the other side. Some carry Milk filled kaavadi and all depends upon the devotees prayers they had in their mind.
These Kaavadis are being decorated in a temple and this function is called Kaavadi Mutharithal...
VEL & SEVARKODI being carried by few devotees in front of the kaavadi, some devotees used to fix it on their kaavadi itself.

Vel Puja is being conducted with abhisheks of Water, Gingelly oil, Turmeric, Kumkum, Thirumanjanam, Jaggery, Ghee, Panchamirth, Milk, Curd, Coconut water, Lemon, Panneer, Sandal paste, Vibhuthi (Holy ash powder)Mixed fruit juices, and flowers.
Once the Vel puja conducted, it is being offered with Deeparadhan, followed by Annadhan to devotees attending the puja.
All these disciples of Lord Muruga carry those kaavadis in their shoulders and walk all the way to the temple by Padayatras ( some devotees bring those kaavadis in their own transport and join Girivalam by walk)
Any visitor to Palani or other major Murugan Temples can see huge number of kaavadis being carried by devotees from their native places followed by Music and dance...
Drum beaters and other instrument players entertain the devotees and inspire them to walk all the way.
All can witness those awesome experiance of Kaavadi attam by the devotees, and this music and dance, along with singing songs praising lord muruga enables the long walking sessions easier.
Kavadi Aattam is the main attraction for the Lord Muruga.
Special songs were created to be sung while carrying the Kavadi Sindhu.
This dance is performed only by men.
This is mainly a religious dance, performed in worship of Lord Murugan
,
The dance is accompanied by Pambai and Naiyandi Melam. The most potent propitiatory rite that a devotee of Lord Muruga undertakes to perform is what is known as the "Kavadi".
The benefits that the devotee gains from offering a Kavadi to the Lord are a million fold greater than the little pain that he inflicts upon himself.
Generally, people take a vow to offer the Lord a Kavadi for the sake of tiding over a great calamity.
Though this might on the face of it appear mercenary, a moment's reflection will reveal that it contains in it the seed for the supreme love for God.
The Wordly object is achieved, no doubt about it and when the devotee carry the kaavadi, he gets intoxiated by God's blessing and his inner spritual chamber gets opened, which ultimately led tothe supereme state of devotion.
Carrying the Kaavadi is a fulfillment of Vow.It brings in immense pleasure & happiness of having recieved Lord Murugan's blessing.
Some of the devotees pin their backs with iron hooks and pull a small wooden chariot with Lord Muruga's idol in it.
All these devotees take bath at Saravana Poikai or Shanmuga Nadhi and worship at Tiruvavinankudi, then adivara pillayar (Ganesh temple) and Start Girivalam, on compleation of girivalam, they climb up 697 steps of the Sivagiri hills to reach Palani Murugan Temple.
Once the prayers offered, all those kaavadis are being un-fastened & offered to Lord Muruga for Abhishek.
There will be number of teams from various places around Tamilnadu assemble at Palani to offer this Kaavadi puja and almost all the chouldries ( Kalyana Mantab's) will be filled to perform the Mass Annadhan for Pligrims visiting the temple.
