My dear friends,
The dilemma of many parents and children to choose the type of educational institutions and the course for studies, be it a primary education or professional course it matters.
The ultimate purpose of providing education to the wards is to excel in academic and later on in competitive examinations, there by pave way for a better employment opportunities and well being.
As the present day educations have been commercialized and lots of competitions in admissions, parents prefer to choose the educational institutions with affordable fee structures and basic amenities.
That too those parents where both of them employed and having single child finds it difficult to put them in local schools and prefer boarding schools.
The whole problem is those single children find it difficult to cope with many children’s and they get the home sick, often resulting in poor performance in studies.
The scopes of getting the attention from teachers to guide them are limited and often under pressure to perform better when they are weak in some subjects.
As it is always preferable to retain these kids at home and make them attend the regular schools than that of boarding schools till they attain the age of 16.
At home they can get their attention from parents and that good homely atmosphere of love and care to guide them a disciplined life and freedom to study.
We have also seen those kids who were let in the hostels at the tender age feeling lonely and when ever they come home for the vacation, they felt odd like a guest in their own house as they were accustomed to hostel atmosphere of sharing the dormitory with other co students as well as their life style changes to westernized culture, since most of the boarding schools are run by Christian missionaries which follows systems of their own.
Our culture values lost due to lack of opportunities for the kids to experience in the long run.
Once the kids are under the control of good tutors and wardens during their boarding schools they are able to catch up with discipline and good manners if not they turn out to be rebellious in nature due to 24x7 by dictatorial teachers and sadistic wardens.
We cannot avoid such situations unless we are watching our wards the changes in them periodically and advice them to understand the realities.
Every child has their own strengths and weakness and it is up to the parents and teachers to identify and guide them for a bright future.
In any case Dormitory cannot be a reformatory for those tender age kids, they need the personal love and affections at all times.
Forcing them are abusing them will make them ruffians later on life with full of hatred ness in their life time.
Allow kids to express, listen to their queries, compensate them with necessary explanations, provide them the opportunity to understand, fulfill their needs and be kind at the same time deal strictly when occasion arise.
Children are our gifted pearls in life and once they are well off, we can feel the happiness in them, in our selves and to the society.
Never thrust them our desires and allow them to express their choice of studies as well as their talents to excel.
Provide the atmosphere of cordial and understanding the needs of life’s mission.

Agreed Subbu, The other day I saw a program in National Geography, on how families with single child, particularly the rebellious sort are sent to a correction school (???) which is a heady mix of a military school and torture chambers. I could see the children crying and bleeding at times. I beleive that this method is an outcome of a leftist world view and I have no judgement to pass.
For a humanistic level this is tragic. That children are being treated this way, be it in Tirupur or Beijing or in every single ambitious home.
How does ambition come it? In a free market economy - hard/smart work equals money or riches. This is a clear equation that is finding its way into peoples life. And Riches is only measure with the physical investments. The root of the problem lies some where here.
Is important that we do not bite into this western world view and hold on to our own. Our joint family, our social structure, the most prominant place for elders, etc are our riches not the gold under our feet, or the shares in the DP account.
Its important for the Indian families to get rooted on our culture and heritage. Speak to children regularly, teach them the stories and the history of our land, root them on the culture, expose them to different world views with out getting them begotted., nurture them with values. PLEASE DO NOT OUTSOURCE EDUCATION WTIH TUTIONS AND DISCILINE BY SENDING THEM TO RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS
That is the greatest damage you can do to the next generation
